Pets are creatures of habit – so what happens when you need to change part of your daily routine? Here are six tips to make these changes less stressful and more rewarding for you and your pet!

With the sunny summer months just around the corner, there are lots of exciting new activities on the horizon! Whether you’re looking forward to weekend hikes, a seasonal job or evenings out on restaurant terraces with your friends, your winter routine is based on an upgrade. However, your pet may not be as excited as you are when you go out just when he is waiting for your usual cuddling session!

Even if your Routine does not change, nature changes! Most pets wake up when the sun comes up and sleep when it goes down, and their circadian rhythm could make them wake up a few hours earlier with the early summer sunrise.

Any change in Routine can be a source of anxiety for pets and humans, and it will make things easier for everyone if you prepare for these changes together. These simple tips will help you make the upcoming changes more exciting than stressful and leave you with a much happier dog or cat!

# 1. gradually change the routines

If you are significantly changing your pet’s daily routine, it is important not to go cold turkey! If you change the time of a normal part of your Routine, such as walks or eating, move it gradually.

For example, if the usual dinner time is 5:30, but you need to move it to 6:30, adjust it gradually. You will notice when dinner arrives an hour late, but if you keep postponing it for 15 minutes over the course of a week or two, you will not notice anything. (Keep this in mind the next time you need to set your clocks back to Daylight saving Time!)

When you introduce a new activity or Routine into your day, start with simple exercises. For example, if you have to travel every weekend, start introducing short weekend getaways a few weeks in advance. Leave at the time when you need to walk normally so that your pet learns what to expect, but start with a 15-minute walk outside. You can sit on the porch and have an extra cup of coffee before heading back for the rest of your day.

After a few days, go to the cafe for an hour instead. Keep adding until your pet feels comfortable with your new Routine so that he doesn’t have major separation anxiety on the first day!

#2. Making the new changes fun

You are your pet’s favorite person in the world (besides the postman who always gives them treats) and it’s not fun to be gone! If you have to be outside the house, make your pet feel more comfortable being alone by giving him something he likes to focus on. A snuff mat or a Puzzle toy filled with favorite treats or the TELEVISION for your favorite natural documentary could actually make you want to spend some time alone!

The same logic applies to all other changes that you might find unpleasant. Does your long-haired pet need a lot more brushing in the summer? Take out the secret peanut butter or the coveted tube treats just for the occasion. Are you stressed by car trips? Put your favorite music in the car.

#3. get your energy out

The goal of any stressful period is to help your pet stay cool — and you won’t do that if you’re full of energy! body activity is the best way to reduce your pet’s energy levels and prepare him for a big nap in time for a day alone, a long car ride or a trip to the vet.

If you start early in the day and don’t want to work out in the morning, try playing with a laser pointer or having a pick-up game in the garden. You can sit back, save your energy and drink a glass of fresh water while your pet takes out his Zoomies.

#4. stay cool

Your pets can recognize when they are excited or very stressed, and they will react in the same way. That said, if you are desperately looking for your keys on the way to work, your pet will definitely feel the fear too — and this will not prepare him for a relaxing day alone. Do your best to stay gentle and not walk a lot to meet your pet’s expectations.

This also applies to positive interactions! You might be tempted to shower your pet with affection when you leave or when you return home, but great excitement shows you that what is happening is a big problem. It is actually more beneficial for most pets to ignore any manic energy on their part and keep things as discreet as possible to reduce Stress and normalize this Routine.

# 5. Bring them in!

We want our pets to be able to go anywhere with us – that’s why we take them to as many places as possible! If you have a pet who likes to get out of the house, he might enjoy some of your activities more than expected.

Taking them on your weekend hikes is a breeze, but have you checked to see if the local Bars have a pet-friendly patio for your Friday drinks? Do you work outdoors or in a pet-friendly office? Your pet might like to stay by your side — and all the attention he receives from your peers.
